Reviving History: KO Junk Removal’s Role in Preserving Yukon’s Old Central School

At KO Junk Removal, we were thrilled to have been a part of the transformation and preservation of the historic Old Central School in Yukon. This project was not just about clearing out debris; it was about respecting the past while paving the way for future use.

The Old Central School, a 114-year-old structure, was a significant landmark in Yukon with a rich history. Built in 1910, it initially served as the “District School” for grades 1-12 until 1925. Over the years, it transformed into the Yukon Museum & Arts Center, becoming a hub for the community as the home of the Yukon Historical Society Museum, Stage Door community theater, and Yukon Veterans Museum. However, the building had remained vacant for the past decade.

We started the cleanup on September 30th and removed over 500 cubic yards of items from the building. Our task was to clean out the building from top to bottom, removing trash, debris, and potentially hazardous materials. This was a vital step in preserving the integrity of the building and preparing it for future renovations. We understood the challenges that came with handling hazardous materials, and our team was dedicated to ensuring a safe and thorough clean-up process.

This project was more than just a clean-up; it was about preserving a beloved piece of Yukon’s history. The building’s sturdy two-foot-thick walls and its historical significance made it an irreplaceable part of the community. By removing debris and replacing the roof, we helped to stop water damage and preserve the structure for future generations.

The future of Old Central School looked promising. Yukon Public Schools planned to renovate the building, potentially funded through a bond issue, to create a space that could once again serve the district’s needs. There was talk of decorating the walls with old-school photographs and using the auditorium for board meetings, blending history with modern functionality.

At KO Junk Removal, we were committed not only to clean-up but to community service and historical preservation. Being part of such a meaningful project aligned with our values and our dedication to enhancing the communities we serve. The Old Central School held a special place in the hearts of many, and we were honored to contribute to its revival, ensuring it remained a cherished landmark in Yukon for years to come.
